Very Special Guest

Laura LiPuma is a legendary art director and designer known for her indelible visual work with Prince and her influential contributions to the visual identity of popular music. She began her career at Warner Bros. Records in 1982, where she was hired as an in-house art director.

Her first Prince assignment was designing the single sleeve for “Let’s Pretend We’re Married” from his 1999 album. In 1984, she met Prince on the set of the “When Doves Cry” video to discuss artwork for his upcoming album Purple Rain, marking the beginning of a prolific creative partnership. She went on to art direct five of his most iconic album releases (Purple Rain, Around the World in a Day, Parade, Sign o’ the Times, and Lovesexy), as well as numerous singles that helped define Prince’s visual identity during his most groundbreaking era.

During this time, LiPuma also played a pivotal role in shaping the visual language of Paisley Park Records, Prince’s Warner Bros.–distributed label. While working on Around the World in a Day, she was tasked by Prince with developing the label’s branding. Collaborating with the extremely talented designer Margo Chase, she created the enduring Paisley Park logo and designed a variety of vinyl labels for LPs and singles, as well as all advertising and merchandising. The Paisley Park logo remains in use to this day.

As art director for Paisley Park Records, she led visual direction for a roster that included Sheila E., The Time, Madhouse, The Family, Mazarati, and others within the Paisley Park orbit.

Beyond the Prince camp, LiPuma has created countless album covers for a wide range of artists. At the end of 1988, she accepted the position of VP/Creative Director in the Warner Bros/Nashville office. With deep expertise in branding and creative leadership, she has led several in-house art departments, including Gibson Guitar, to achieve award-winning results, leaving a lasting impact on the visual culture of music.
