The movie that depicts Christopher Tracy’s final 17 days on earth has often been dismissed as the first real failure in Prince’s career. That might be so, but it is not a failure because of a lack of ambition. The movie seems goofy and shallow on the surface. But judging from the movie’s screenplay Prince tried to include some deeper layers. From homages to the new wave of French cinema to Greek mythology, superstition and Christian/Catholic imagery. But most of that ended on the cutting room floor. This presentation has a focus on the protagonist’s name Christopher, which is of Greek origin (Christophoros). Derived from khrīstós (Christ) and phérō (to bear/carry) it signifies a strong connection to Christianity. But it is also famously associated with Saint Christopher, the patron saint of travelers. And this specific saint originally had a significant role in the movie and its tragic ending.

Edgar Kruize is a freelance author, journalist, and content creator based in the Netherlands. He is the co-owner of the communications agency buro33. He is specialized in music in general and specifically the entertainment industry. Kruize has been working for various (trade) magazines, concert and tour promoters, festival organizers, and record companies for almost three decades. He has written nine books on various musical subjects.

All it took was a cough in the “Raspberry Beret” video to have the young Edgar notice the artist he’d later found out to be Prince. Ever since, Prince’s impressive body of work has been an inspiration in life and work. Kruize is the author of the books, Prince: The Dutch Experience (2017) and Prince: The Ultimate Dutch Experience (planned for 2026). Also, he wrote the liner notes for the 2019 Sign “O” The Times Deluxe DVD/Blu-ray set (along with appearing in the accompanying documentary), and (co)hosted multiple Prince-themed lectures, theater shows, and live interviews.
